Hillary's Next Move

I just finished reading a wonderful new article to be published in tomorrow's New York Time's by Gail Collins who interviewed Secretary Clinton before the election.  I get every indication that once Hillary chills for a year, she will run in 2016.

In the article which is mainly a lighter look at HRC, we learn that the Secretary loves home improvement and home buying shows on television.  Her favorite is Love It of List It.  The main quote from the entire article is quite poignant if not a little sad.  This woman who has given everything to her country and worked non-stop for 20 years in the national spotlight is exhausted. Asked what she wants to do after leaving the State Department:

I want to see whether I can get untired.

I can't imagine the fatigue both mental and physical.

“I am so looking forward to next year,” she said. “I just want to sleep and exercise and travel for fun. And relax. It sounds so ordinary, but I haven’t done it for 20 years. I would like to see whether I can get untired. I work out and stuff, but I don’t do it enough and I don’t do it hard enough because I can’t expend that much energy on it.”

Notice that we are less than a minute into her paean to not doing anything, and already she is planning her workouts.

It seems reasonable to assume that right now, Clinton’s lack of interest in a presidential race is genuine. Despite her legendary ability to fall asleep at will — even on that airplane daybed — she is really, really tired. And at 65, she has no way of knowing how fully her body will rebound when she stops punishing it.

As one who has never been a Clintonite and vehemently opposed Mrs. Clinton in 08 for PBO, (mainly due to the Iraq War vote in her case).  I have a new found respect and enthusiasm for both Clintons. Appointing Hillary was the first step in the re--election of PBO and Big Dog has been an invaluable asset in this campaign.

So as a Progressive who knows that Hillary would likely win the presidency in 2016, I want her to take her time and hopefully decides to run. What I would want to see is a more progressive 2.0 Hillary and a less cautious one than the one who ran in 2008.  She should be buoyed by the space opened up in this election for a more progressive politics.  The other positive I see in a Hillary candidacy is that she could groom a true progressive successor as VP--Sherrod Brown, Elizabeth Warren, Al Franken, Julian Castro, Deval Patrick, Tammy Baldwin.

Thank you for your service Mrs. Clinton, kick your feet up for a year, watch those home improvement shows-- I love the ID network myself--and then please come back for one more campaign.  Make history as the first woman president and finish appointing the all democratic supreme court.   PBO will have your back and if he has your back that means we will have your back.  Think about it!
